Manasi Joshi (About Socrates)

Sukraat : Sukraat who known as Socrates. Socrates was an ancient Greek philosopher, one of the three greatest figures of the ancient period of Western philosophy (the others were Plato and Aristotle), who lived in Athens in the 5th century BCE. Socrates was a widely recognized and controversial figure in his native Aethens, he was often ridiculed in the plays of comic playwrighting. Socrates seems to be a very simple man, not having many material possessions and speaking in a plain, conversational manner. However, this seeming plainness is all a part of the ironic characteristic of Socrates' method.

Socrates believed that no one does wrong voluntarily. Evil is the result of ignorance. If people knew what the right thing was to do, they would do it. He believed that all virtues were based on knowledge hence Socrates is characterized as a virtue intellectualist. According to him living a virtuous life is the highest form of happiness, Virtu like a justice is the true measure of a successful life.

The Apology is Plato's recounting of Socrates's defense at this trial for atheism and corruption of the youth of Athens. Plato wrote the Apology to demonstrate the unjust nature of the trial and to reveal that Socrates, not the judges who condemned him, was representative of truth.
